Network Requirements

iZettle Pro has a specific set of *network requirements*, which must be followed to keep things running smoothly.

There are two different types of requirements: basic and full. If any of the three points below describe your business, then you’ll have to follow the full network requirements.

  • Use of the table networking feature
  • Use of mobile iPads (iPads not fixed at a counter location)
  • Use of 5+ iPads for a single location

If none of these apply to your business, then the basic network requirements are right for you.

Basic Network Requirements

Physical requirements for iZettle Pro

  • A shelf or countertop space of [w] 40 x [l] 40 x [h] 20cm per cash drawer
    • If placing the POS system on a countertop with a cash drawer underneath, we advise having a 25mm hole in the counter for cabling to go through. If this is not possible, cabling can be placed around the top of your countertop.
  • One Standard UK power socket (240v 13A) for each printer, each iPad and each card reader.
  • One Ethernet RJ45 CAT5 cable for each networked (ethernet) printer you will be connecting to your broadband router/network.

Wifi coverage

  • Four full bars of wifi signal displayed on the iPad at all locations where an iPad will be used. Minimum of 0.5 mbps speed.
  • If you offer guest wifi, please avoid using iZettle Pro with the same wifi connection the guests use.

Music or video streaming services

  • No streaming services (e.g. Spotify, Sonos, etc.) should be installed or used on the same iPad or even on the same network as iZettle Pro. These services take priority on the network and can cause printer/cash drawer delays or errors. You can stream music to a separate VLAN (virtual local area network) if you can enable this on your router.

Incompatible network equipment

  • Smart or managed switches are incompatible with iZettle Pro, and must not be used for connecting routers to access points or for connecting printers to the router.
  • Cable splitters must not be used for dual traffic running down one cable, where one half of this traffic is iZettle Pro traffic.
  • Powerline adaptors must not be used for extending cabling through electrical circuits. They are not compatible with iZettle Pro.

Full Network Requirements

Physical requirements for iZettle Pro

  • One Standard UK power socket (240v13A) for each printer, each iPad and each card reader required.
  • Shelf or countertop space of [w] 40 x [l] 40 x [h] 20cm per cash drawer.
    • If placing the POS system on a countertop with a cash drawer underneath, we advise having a 25mm hole in the counter for cabling to go through. If this is not possible, cabling can be placed around the top of your countertop.
  • One Ethernet RJ45 CAT5 cable for each networked (ethernet) printer you will be connecting to your broadband router/network.
  • One Apple Lightning cable – if using a Lightning port printer – to connect directly to the iPad.

Wifi coverage

  • Four full bars of wifi signal displayed on the iPad at all locations where an iPad will be used. Minimum of 5 Mbps speed.

Traffic separation

  • Where a broadband line will be shared between iZettle Pro and other services – such as staff wifi, customer wifi, CCTV or music streaming – you must separate out a discreet part of the network solely for use by iZettle Pro.
  • You should do this using a completely separate router and access point for iZettle Pro traffic where possible.
  • If this is not feasible, you can separate traffic instead by splitting the network into dedicated VLAN’s from the router, with iZettle Pro traffic being assigned to VLAN 0 and other traffic being separated to VLAN (virtual local area network) 1, 2, 3 and so on.
  • It may also be necessary to limit the bandwidth allocation on VLAN 1, 2, 3 to ensure traffic priority is given to iZettle Pro.

Band and channel selection

  • For any location using mobile iPads and/or the table management part of the system, a dual-band router or access point must be installed, with all iZettle Pro wifi traffic being set up on the 5GHZ wifi band.
  • All other wifi traffic should use the 2.4GHZ band.
  • The least congested wifi channel must be used for iZettle Pro traffic (particularly where multiple access points are in use).

Bonjour service and device discovery

  • Bonjour service must be enabled on your router/network or set up with port forwarding where required.
  • Device discovery must also be enabled on your router/network.

Incompatible network equipment

  • Smart or managed switches are incompatible with iZettle Pro, and must not be used for connecting routers to access points or for connecting printers to the router.
  • iZettle will not guarantee the reliable operation of iZettle Pro if managed switches are used to set up the network that iZettle Pro uses.
  • Cable splitters must not be used for dual traffic running down one cable, where one half of this traffic is iZettle Pro traffic.
  • Powerline adaptors must not be used for extending cabling through electrical circuits. They are not compatible with iZettle Pro.

Incompatible software

  • No streaming services (e.g. Spotify, Sonos, etc.) should be installed or used on the same iPad or even on the same network as iZettle Pro. These services take priority on the network and can cause printer/cash drawer delays or errors. You can stream music to a separate VLAN (virtual local area network) if you can enable this on your router.

Recommend Network Equipment

  • DrayTek Vigor (2862/2862N model) router or equivalent business-grade, dual-band router
  • Ubiquiti Unifi Access Point (AC-Lite / Pro model) or equivalent business-grade, dual-band AP
  • Unmanaged 1 Gigabit Network Switches for connecting printers and access points to iPads
