How does ‘Tap on Phone’ work?

iZettle allows you to take contactless payments by tapping your customer’s card to the back of your Samsung phone (Samsung Galaxy S8 or newer). Simply add products to your shopping basket and then select Tap on Phone as the payment method.

How to take Tap on Phone payments?

  • Go to “Tap on Phone” in Settings and tap “Activate”. This step may take a few minutes.
  • Add a product to your shopping basket or enter a custom amount.
  • Tap “Charge”, select “Tap on Phone” as the payment method and show the customer the amount.
  • Instruct the customer to tap their card or payment device (smartphone, Apple Watch etc.) tothe back of your Samsung phone to pay.
  • Make sure you keep the card in contact with your Samsung phone until it has been properly read and you feIf there el your phone buzz.
  • When the payment is approved, you can text or email a receipt to your customer.

Accepted cards

We currently support Visa and Mastercard only.

What do I do if a customer wants to pay with a card you don’t accept?

If a customer comes with an unsupported card (Amex, for example), ask if they have another card or cash. You can also send them a Payment Link so that they can pay from their phone. To do this simply select “Send link” as the payment method when you check out.

What do I do if the payment is above £30?

If the customer pays with their mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google pay) and they verified the payment on their device, the payment should go through just fine above this limit.

However, card purchases above £30 (the limit for contactless paymentsare not supported with Tap on Phone. If so you’ll need an iZettle card reader and your customer will need to enter their PIN to accept larger amounts with a card. To resolve this, you can also send them a Payment Link so that they can pay from their phone. To do this simply select “Send link” as the payment method when you check out.

Increased contactless limits due to COVID-19

To limit the spread of coronavirus in your day-to-day life, the major card networks have temporarily raised the contactless limit from £30 to £45. This means your customers can simply tap their card or device to your phone or card reader when they want to pay –  no physical contact with your PIN pad, more peace of mind!

Payment errors below £30

Occasionally, card issuers may require your customers to enter their PIN even when the purchase is below £30. This is a random safety check to authenticate that the cardholder is present.

If you do not have an iZettle card reader, ask your customer if they have another card or a mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google pay) to make the payment. You can also send them a Payment Link so that they can pay from their phone, to do this simply select “Send link” as the payment method when you check out.

Can I still use Samsung Pay when I buy things?

Yes, now you can both make and take payments using your Samsung phone.

Tap on Phone is a beta feature

Before launching Tap on Phone to everyone, we’re trying it out on a select few merchants.

The version you’re using has been tested rigorously but there may be times when an issue occurs that we didn’t predict. If this happens, please let us know so that we can create the best experience for you.
